Spalted Beech Bowl
Spalting in timber, can result in some truly fantastic colouration and patterning. Beech timber, when harvested at the appropriate time, spalts particularly well; the resultant effects give ornaments such as this form, the look of an old papyrus map of the world. Every piece of spalted timber is completely unique as the natural process of decay in woodland can never be copied in exactly the same way – it is always interesting to discover what is inside a fresh blank. This piece also contains the pith of the log of wood and has been stabilised with epoxy resin along any radial cracks that appeared. Black artists’ pigment was mixed with the epoxy, enhancing the natural black lines of the spalting. This is one of the best examples of Spalted Beech I have found so far.
It is finished and polished with three coats of Liberon Finishing Oil.
